Presenters: Suzanne Kennedy and Lou L. Poskitt

In this session, a Vancouver-based workplace and health law expert will guide a discussion centering on various aspects related to workplace law and mental health, including:
o   Mental health and discrimination;
o   Pre-employment and the recruitment process;
o   Duty to accommodate in employment;
o   Mental illness and workplace stigma.

Session Objectives:

1. To provide an overview and basic understanding of discrimination principles;
2. To provide some tools to understand and navigate work place issues arising from mental illness
3. To outline key professional responsibilities; and perhaps 
4. To provide of some important and informing resources

Suzanne Kennedy is a genuine person who understands the importance of teamwork and collegiality. She incorporates these values as she assists clients resolve complex and time sensitive issues.

Suzanne has a varied practice with a strong focus on education law, health law and privacy matters representing both public and private sector clients. During her career of nearly two decades, Suzanne has represented various health care and educational professionals and organizations and has provided advice to clients in a range of areas including employment, professional regulatory proceedings, court and administrative tribunal proceedings, procurement, contract negotiations, and strategic advice and opinions on regulatory compliance.

Suzanne has also written and presented on a range of topics to assist professionals in matters affecting their responsibilities and practices. In the growing area of privacy law, Suzanne works with public and private sector clients as they navigate the implications of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, the Personal Information Protection Act and related legislation.

Before joining Harris in 2014, Suzanne practised health law and corporate commercial law with an emphasis on administrative law, health law, and privacy at the Vancouver office of a national firm. 

Lou L. Poskitt advises and represents private sector employers, primarily in the hospitality and retail sectors, with a particular focus in human rights and labour law. She has extensive experience providing training on accommodation issues, responding to human rights complaints, filing applications to dismiss, resolving grievances and advising on collective bargaining. Lou has appeared before the Human Rights Tribunal, the BC Labour Relations Board, various boards of arbitration, the Provincial Court of British Columbia, Supreme Court of British Columbia and the BC Court of Appeal.
